With its approximately 300 thousand citizens, Split is the second largest town in Croatia. It is situated on the coast of Middle Dalmatia. In front of Split there can be found a lot of islands as, for instance, Brac, Hvar, Ciovo or Vis. In the hinterland of Split there are the mountains Mosor (1340 meters) and Kozjak (780 meters) which are divided by a canyon.
The city of Split is known as a great historic and religious centre of Croatia. It is an imperator’s town and plays an important role in Croatian history. As Split possesses a very good geographical position, it can also rely on a well traffic connection. There are distinguished economic and cultural institutions, universities and academies in the town.
The citizens of Split are very proud of their town. 1700 years ago the imperator Diokletian put Split on the map of the Roman Empire. In Split he built his famous Diokletian Palace. Split is known as one of the most lively, but also oldest cities in Croatia. It is listed among the UNESCO places of world cultural heritage.
